when james lake jr. turned five years old, his father james lake sr. left barbara lake. he took the keys, walked out the door and left his old life behind to never be heard from again. barbara softly reassured jim they'd stick together and look after each other, and they've been close knit ever since. he met toby domzalski in kindergarten; and after toby's parents' death, jim and toby became as thick as thieves.

eventually, the nunez family moved to arcadia. jim had been fourteen when ophelia nunez held a party that barbara had been invited to. his mom took him along as her plus-one and he'd danced with her. claire had seen, and taken some interest in jim, unbeknownst to him.

at fifteen, however, and the start of a new school year, any mundane life he led had quickly fizzled out. a late start to a new school day has jim and toby cutting across a well used shortcut to save five minutes on bike to school through the canals slicing through arcadia. there, upon innocent pavement, the two boys discovered a pile of rubble that somehow called to jim. digging into the fragments of stone, jim discovers that the relic calling his name is the trollhunter amulet.

thus, its sacred mantle burdened his shoulders, and its weight earns him the affectionate nickname young atlas from his father figure, history teacher walter strickler upon his questioning over some extracurricular activities, trying to conceal what he's truly undertaken from him.

jim quickly learns that sleepy arcadia is full to the brim of what is more than a quick glance, that the town houses a dangerous past - connected to the tales of camelot, not that he knew of it yet.

blinkous galadrigal takes up the challenge of tutoring jim in troll society's ways, and to make him the best trollhunter jim could possibly be. unfortunately, this is not a simple task - as jim being the first human trollhunter is something many trolls take issue with.

over time, jim learns of his adversaries: bular, gunmar and the changelings. stakes are raised ever higher, with jim's own humanity hanging on by a thread that eventually snaps, cut by a pair of scissors handed to him by the fabled master wizard, merlin.

personality.//

jim is in a word selfless. when his mother needed it, jim became the main caretaker around the house. he looked after his mother and made sure she ate, as well as extra servings of meals for toby to try his latest concotions. he cares about his friends and family to the point it can become overbearing and overprotective. jim does have a bit of a reputation for being a good kid and rather likeable, though this can be read as him trying to be liked. he can be a little nervous and flighty, especially when it comes to inter-personal relationships, and around people he's not fully sure about.

he's quick to take to new adventures, once he gets over the initial doom of his permanent profession as the trollhunter until his death. jim pushes through his fear and overcomes the obstacles in front of him. he can be quite stubborn. catching him off guard, however, results in him becoming more anxious.

jim can have a difficult time changing his mind once it's set on something. he's willing to lie to his loved ones if he feels that it will keep them safer. he knows it may strain relationships, but he'd rather them be angry at him and alive. he can be jealous of others, especially if they seem to be getting along well with romantic interests. his self-sacrificial tendencies go a little too hand-in-hand with impulsive actions, and he's more than happy to take the fall for his friends and family if it means their safety.

jim can also lay on grudges thickly - especially against those he judges as an enemy.

overall, jim is a friend, though one should try not to get on his bad side. he protects his friends until he can no longer do so.

family hcs: barbara changed her name back to lake after her husband left her. jim named himself when he was younger and added jr - though his father being james sturges makes it kind of moot to have the jr in his name. barbara called him junior as a kid for a while. he kept the junior as a sort of nickname.
other headcanons: jim will feed his friends no matter what, and often carries snacks like a grandmother. this is both taking human and troll food into account. he has a need for oral & chewing stims after returning to human form, like his mouth doesn't feel right; the habit persists after he manages to get himself back to a troll form au wise.

Due to in part of the Akademiya lifestyle, Layla is highly devoted to her studies, but this has also left her somewhat paranoid and highly sleep deprived, making her very timid and looking like she could collapse from exhaustion at any point. Despite these traits, Layla is unusually perseverant, having outlasted several of her classmates who had joined at the same time as her.

Layla's lack of sleep is to the point that she ends up sleepwalking in the night, where an alternate personality manifests from her. This persona is energetic and determined, helping solve all of her problems (who dubs the present Layla as "Daytime") in an instant. When Layla wakes up, she expresses surprise as to how her papers had been completely finished. She appears to be unaware of her alternate persona, instead believing that she's blessed by the stars.
